Music As Information Package
Music is a form of information about patterns of sound/song that humans sing/produce for an aesthetic response. Music can be recorded as sheet music and some should be selected for preservation.
As with words, all strings of words or notes ever composed by any human cannot be preserved for posterity to consider. There are limits to the number or words or notes a human can consider in a lifetime, so music, as an information package for posterity, needs to be selected, e.g. into a top 100, 1,000, 10e4, 10e5…. lists/collections based on some selection criteria.
Proposed is the number of times a randomly selected human (having enough interest to listen to other than just their ethnic-cultural identity music) can listen to a composition without becoming bored with it as measured by their subjective response (tolerance/intolerance) to repetition.
For example, Boya’s High Mountains and Flowing Water composition has been passed on from generation to generation (110 and counting) because each generation selects to hear it repeatedly, and the composition’s appeal is across temporal and cultural boundaries.
Asking individuals to list preferences is one way to compile a list of music to preserve. The number of times a person can listen to a composition without becoming distressed (1 to infinite) is another measure.
If a composition cannot be listened to more than once (except by the composer (or close friend/family) by a statistically significant number of humans, then it would rank low on the list. Compositions that can be listened to repeatedly (up to daily without measurable limit unto death) by the largest percentage of listeners would be on the other end of the list.
A list based on one listener’s self assessment is a start. In my youth I took an interest in music and checked out records from the public library (all genres and cross cultural) and noted that some could be repeatedly listened to with notable interest and some were dissonant on first hearing and did not bare repeating. A sample of one is insignificant, but the methodology is repeatable.
The list below is a start. Combined with the results from 10 million other listeners would produce a different list. Listeners who prefer only the music of their ethnic identity group or subculture, rejecting all others, would make poor test subjects as their preference would not be a measure of musical preference.

I boiled the above about 465 down to a 365 list. I haven’t been paying attention enough to add to the list. Omissions are certain, both before and after 2008. Suggestions, preferably with a link, for posterity’s sake are to consider. And if a million music listeners make there own list, they could be combined. A volume of sheet music of the top 365 would be an information package of potential value, something potentially worth doing — YouTube, digital music is for a time.
